Michael Polanyi referred to this as <em>tacit knowledge<\/em> (Polanyi, 1966). It&#8217;s the reason one lab gets consistently better results than another, even when they&#8217;re following the same protocol. That kind of knowledge is valuable, but it&#8217;s also fragile. Protocols are written all the time, but they don&#8217;t always capture everything that matters. Methods sections are often compressed, polished, or strategically vague\u2014sometimes to save space, sometimes to protect a lab&#8217;s &#8220;secret sauce,&#8221; and sometimes simply because there isn&#8217;t room for every detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efforts like the <em>Journal of Visualized Experiments<\/em> (JoVE) recognize this gap by showing procedures on video, because some techniques are easier to demonstrate than to describe. Open protocols, online repositories, and communities of practice have helped move science toward greater transparency, but there is still plenty of knowledge that lives only in conversations, notebooks, and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microlore exists to help preserve that knowledge. Here you&#8217;ll find methods, observations, experiments, practical guidance, references, and stories. Some articles are polished references. Others explore an idea that&#8217;s still taking shape. Some may simply document something interesting before it&#8217;s forgotten. My hope is that if something here helps you solve a problem, look at a sample differently, or sparks an idea of your own, then it was worth writing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>JoVE. University of Chicago Press.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About M<\/strong>e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m a microscopist, and have been for decades. I like asking questions and figuring out why things happen. I like understanding how systems work (including people), especially when the underpinnings aren&#8217;t obvious. I don&#8217;t believe good ideas belong only in journals, and I don&#8217;t think expertise should be hidden behind unnecessary complexity. I&#8217;m no martyr falling on a sword of pedanticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t have much interest in staying in one lane. Good ideas don&#8217;t care what field they come from, and I&#8217;ve found that some of the best solutions come from connecting ideas that normally don&#8217;t meet. Valuable lessons often come from conversations, failed experiments, and unexpected discoveries. Those moments rarely become part of the scientific record, even though they shape the way we work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve always liked stories. Years ago, when I was getting to know someone, I&#8217;d sometimes ask, &#8220;Tell me a story.&#8221; It usually led to a much better conversation than the standard questions. I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s changed. Every method has a story. Every experiment has one. Every discovery, every failed attempt, every small improvement came from somewhere. The story isn&#8217;t decoration. It&#8217;s often where the useful knowledge lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something here helps you solve a problem, challenges an assumption, or sends you off on a new line of thinking, then I&#8217;ve accomplished what I set out to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microlore has two team members: Sarah and Halie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah handles the science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halie handles everything else.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About Microlore Microlore is an independent collection of microscopy methods, observations, practical knowledge, and stories.
